Gilligan’s Island and the Seven Deadly Sins – Bible Study
Lesson 3
Section Title: “Ginger”
Lesson Title: “I Don’t Lust You Anymore”
Biblical Principles: Lust
Review Deadly Sin of Lust and heavenly virtue Chastity:
Proverbs 6:25-26 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life.
Colossians 3:5-6 Put to death therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature; sexual immorality, impunity, lust, evil desires. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
Sometimes it seems our society praises lust and thinks love is a four letter word. Lust and Love are two different things. Love encompasses ideals such as trust, devotion, appreciation and sacrifice. Lust is sexual arousal. Thus, lust dehumanizes us, while love affirms our humanity. Lust is sinful because it lessens the love that is due to God by distracting us with a cheap substitute in the flesh. Becoming Chaste involves two actions – turning from sexual sin and turning toward God.
Watch Video Lesson 3
2 Corinthians 7:1 Since we have these (God’s) Promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
Lust is a vice of indulgence. By contrast, chastity is a virtue of abstinence. While abstinence takes strength, sinful indulgence is a sign of weakness.
1 John 2:15-16 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world the cravings of sinful man, the lust of the eyes comes not from the Father but from the world.
Reflection / Your Inner Gilligan
Job 31:1 I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl.
Lust usually begins with a look. With this simple act, you can contaminate your entire being. From the eyes, lust invades the mind, then infects the heart, then defiles the body. Equally as guilty, some invite you to lust as a means to get their way, flirting in order to gain favor. They may argue that this manipulation is all right as long as no one gets hurt – when in fact, someone is always hurt by lust. The seeming freedom to do what you want with your body is actually slavery to the desire of your body. It is better for both the looker and the one being looked at to behave chastely. By not looking lustfully or inviting lustful looks, you will be innocent of both inward and outward sins.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. You are not your own you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
Ginger left lust. Too often, people go in search of things to incite lust. However, it is a wise man who physically removes himself from temptation. After all, your body is not your own.
2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Ginger chased chastity. Becoming chaste involves two actions – turning from sexual sin and turning toward God. Indeed, in spiritual battle, to make a stand, you must move.
The world should see a difference between the way Christians and non-Christians live.
Action / Living on the Island
Colossians 3:5-6 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
Like other sins, lust is an attempt to fill the loneliness in your life with worldly things.
But a physical fix will never satisfy a spiritual hunger. Instead of lust, God wants you to fill your life with him in order to keep you from hurting yourself and others. Once saved, you must consider yourself dead to lust – because you are alive in Christ!
